If a DM wasn’t sent, the reason is usually one of a handful of checks below.
First, check Message History#
In Analytics, select View all activity. If the message is in Message History, Instagram accepted it. A person who doesn’t follow you may find it in their message requests.
Common reasons#
- The automation is paused, or Instagram needs you to reconnect. Check that the row says Live and that no reconnect banner shows.
- The comment didn’t match. Check the trigger words and that the automation covers that post. A Next post or reel automation only starts once that post is published.
- Another automation answered it. One comment runs one automation.
- They already got a DM on this post. Each person gets one DM per post, on their first comment.
- They replied STOP earlier, so they’ve opted out.
- The comment came before the automation went live. A new automation doesn’t DM earlier commenters by itself. Use Recover missed DMs (below).
- More than 7 days had passed. Instagram allows a private reply only within 7 days of the comment.
- Instagram couldn’t reach the person: their account is deleted, deactivated or restricted, or the comment is gone.
It may just be waiting#
- With Opening message or Ask to follow first on, the link waits for the person’s tap and, if needed, a confirmed follow.
- Follow-ups wait until the person’s 24-hour window is open.
- On a busy post, DMs queue up and go out steadily. The row shows how many are waiting.
- If Instagram asked Zetrr to slow down, you’ll see “Taking a short breather.” Every reply is saved and sends by itself.
If Instagram never told Zetrr about a comment, Zetrr re-checks recent comments regularly and answers the ones it missed.
Recover missed DMs#
- Open Automations.
- Open the automation’s ⋯ menu.
- Select Recover missed DMs, then Recover.
Zetrr scans recent comments and DMs anyone who matched but hasn’t been messaged yet, within Instagram’s 7-day window. It works for comments only: button taps and DMs can’t be read back from Instagram.
“Instagram recently refused a reply”#
This notice means Instagram refused a reply because Zetrr didn’t have control of that conversation. If your Instagram account is linked to a Facebook Page, the Page’s messaging permissions on Facebook decide this. Select Show Facebook permission steps, follow them, then test with a fresh comment.
Still stuck?#
Get help from the Zetrr team and include the Instagram username of the person who didn’t get the DM.
